Giovanni Francesco Castiglione was the son and pupil of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, one of the leading Genoese artists of the 17th century. Giovanni Francesco spent his early years travelling with his father between their native Genoa and Rome, Venice, and the courts of Padua and Mantua. His style and subject matter imitated that of his father, with the result that his works are often confused for those of Castiglione senior. This painting was likely made in around 1660 and closely resembles a work of the same subject by Castiglione senior (Kress Collection K1775A). The scene depicts an episode from the Old Testament story of Jacob. However, the sheep, chickens and noisily gobbling turkeys in the foreground take centre stage. Giovanni Francesco fuses the traditions of Italian religious paintings with Dutch and Flemish barnyard pictures, which were widely collected in Italy at the time.
