A larger than life-size rugby ball surmounting a reconstituted stone plinth and square stone base, with integrated lights. The ball is angled in the kicking position and is decorated with images of four famous Wigan rugby league players – Jim Sullivan, Billy Boston, Tom Bradshaw and Joe Egan – whose names also appear on the ball. In 1997 Tesco plc acquired Central Park, the famous ground of Wigan Rugby Football Club (since 1902), to develop as a supermarket. Tesco decided to recognise the historical importance of the site by commissioning this sculpture.
