At one time there was a concentration of small manufacturing workshops in the Yards and one of the historic industries was glove-making. The lead designer, Geoff Wood, took the symbol of the gloved hand as a motif to beckon people into the Yards and there are three large Golden Gloved hands pointing out the entrances at South Street, Low Pavement and Library Square. Further into the alleys there are groups of smaller hands holding artefacts that indicate past and current uses of the premises: a set of three tea and coffee pots; a set of fruit and vegetables – melon, cauliflower, artichoke; a light bulb in a magician’s gloved hand, (referring to the fact that Chesterfield was one of the first towns in England to have electric light, powered by transformers housed in nearby Theatre Yard – the bulb refers directly to an early design for an incandescent light bulb designed by Joseph Swan of the Company Brush Swan who provided that early lighting equipment for Chesterfield); a jewelled hand; a magnifying glass inspects a small pile of gold dust; a red hand holds a falconry glove.

The main gloves are on South Street, Central Pavement and in the Yards diagonally opposite the library in Library Square; the other parts of the sculpture are scattered within the Yards in Theatre Yard, Falcon Yard; all are set high up on the walls.
