By 1923, Mackintosh had renounced architecture and design and moved to the South of France where he concentrated on watercolour painting. His main preoccupation was the interaction of manmade and natural landscapes. Many of his paintings depict Port Vendres, a small port near the Franco-Spanish border. This watercolour shows Fort Mailly, a ruined sixteenth-century fortification on the outskirts of Port Vendres.
