A landscape painting in oil depicting the biblical journey of Mary and Joseph and the infant Jesus from Israel into Egypt in order to escape persecution. The holy family is shown resting amid an Egyptian landscape which incorporates themes from both Christianity and from classical culture. The painting is indicative of the Rococo movement that spread across Europe during the 18th century. Jan van Huysum was born in Amsterdam. His father Justus Van Huysum the Elder was also an artist, as were his three brothers, Justus the Younger, Jacob and Michiel. Jan studied with his father and soon established himself as the leading still life painter of his time. He practiced all his life in Amsterdam as a flower painter and occasionally painted landscapes.
