The painting depicts the scene from Charlotte Brontë's novel 'Jane Eyre' where the heroine first meets her employer Mr Rochester. Painted in a late-Victorian romantic style, it was donated by the artist, who specialised in painting scenes from the lives of famous public figures, and from novels.
