Gott exhibited this model at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1820 as number 1025. This was the first year in which his name is found among the exhibitors. The piece was subsequently exhibited as number 311 at the British Institution in 1821. The catalogue entry for the Royal Academy of Arts exhibition is accompanied by the following explanation: 'Spartacus chief of the revolted gladiators, having spread universal alarm over Italy, and defeated some of the Roman generals, was at length overpowered by a large army led by Crassus; and having been wounded in the thigh, he fought upon his knees until he fell exhausted upon a heap of Romans whom he had sacrificed to his fury, BC 71.' The original marble is in the National Gallery in Washington DC.
