This painting is by a Mr Ellis 'the Limner', who is recorded as supplying three paintings to the corporation in the early 1680s, each of these being imitations of earlier originals. The commission for the portrait of the Duke of York, as he then was, appears to have been a move calculated to demonstrate the city's official disapproval of popular support in Coventry for the traitorous Duke of Monmouth, who actually stayed in Coventry in September 1682. As King, James II visited the city in 1687, and a grand banquet was held at the Guildhall in his honour. Unfortunately a hapless guest leaned on an overloaded table, causing it to collapse and shower the royal party with food.
