Two Buckley brickworks (Knowle Lane and The Mount) were adjacent. As the clayholes developed, they approached each other. A dispute arose over the intervening valuable clay. The boundary was marked by a pyramid surmounted by a tall pillar of clay. Expensive legal arguments resulted in a dead-lock. Representatives of each company gathered at the boundary to argue out the heated dispute, but with little success. An uneducated workman asked permission to speak. 'That pillar will tipple over within a week' he prophesied, 'Whichever side it falls on – let them have ownership'. They agreed. Messrs Hancock won, and extended, and ultimately took over the area.
