This painting was produced by a disabled miner from South Yorkshire. Mining has always been a dangerous job. Although safety levels dramatically improved, particularly after the industry was nationalised in 1947, serious accidents underground still occurred. Organisations such as the Miners' Welfare Fund and the Coal Industry Social and Welfare Organisation (CISWO) were instrumental in providing community facilities for the benefit of mineworkers and their families. These included welfare institutes, convalescent homes and disabled miners' centres. Art was one of the many activities miners were encouraged to take up. Annual art competitions were held to help develop skills and to recognise new talent.
