In the left background, an impression of the woodcut of the composition by Alfred Rethel 'Der Tod als Freund', in an Arundel Society-type frame. Centre, a bowl of lilies. In the background the dying man with his hands clasped on his chest, and with his faithful hound watching him. On the right wall is a crucifix and a skull in a niche. Published as a wood engraving by J. D. Cooper in the 'English Illustrated Magazine', 1883–1884, vol.1, p.542, as 'Der Tod als Freund', with verses by Du Maurier translated from the French of Madame de Necker.
