The sculpture commemorates the legacy of the footwear industry in the city and county of Leicester and was developed with inspiration from footwear templates and patterns. The title of the piece is in reference to the 'clicker', the cutter of patterns whose name derived from the sound that the knives made clicking against the edge of the templates while cutting the leather.
