The inspiration for Clatworthy’s bull was the sight of an actual bull in the field next to the sculptor’s studio in Sussex. When the plaster version was shown at Holland Park in 1957, Clatworthy said ‘this work is an attempt to discover in plaster an equivalent for the sheer physical power of the bull’. The original plaster of this piece was created in 1956/1957. This bronze cast was made in 1959.
