Venus reclining naked in a large shell with a winged Cupid. This unsigned copy of the original bronze by the leading French sculptor Jacques Pradier (1790 – 1852) is currently the only marble version of this scene known. By showing Venus in an oyster shell, it reflects the myth of her birth from 'the waves'. It has, however, also been suggested that the scene is actually the birth of Cupid, and the sculpture could be entitled ‘The Birth of Love’ (cf. article by Benedict Read).
