This picture was previously listed as by Richard B. Spencer, though clearly signed 'W. B. Spencer' lower left. Both were mid-nineteenth-century ship portrait painters, working in a similar style, and who are thought of have been brothers. They also painted sea battles copied from other images, but in their own style. Richard is more commonly found. The Museum has 14 ship portraits by him and two by William, and other examples (again mainly Richard) are in the Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, and the Peabody Museum, Salem. It has been suggested that Richard's second name was also 'Barnett' but this remains to be demonstrated.
