Legrip was a pupil of Drolling and David d’Angers, and showed at the Salon between 1844 and 1870. He was an accomplished painter who was best known for his historical and religious scenes. Legrip produced lithographs to illustrate his own ‘Souvenirs de voyages’. The town of La Roche-Guyon is situated on the River Seine about half way between Rouen, where Legrip was born and Paris. In this small painting Legrip concentrates on capturing the evening light. Using loosely applied paint with short brushstrokes in shades of pink and orange Legrip depicts the reflection of the afternoon sun upon the clouds. In contrast he applies purple in long smooth brushstrokes that warn of dusk’s onset. A small group of washerwomen are depicted kneeling beside the water.
