An unsentimental yet evocative portrait of the artist's mother. The picture recalls the working class mining household and the social conditions in which Walters was raised. Despite her age (Walters was about 50 years old at the time this portrait was executed) Walters's mother is reading without the aid of spectacles; perhaps the fact that the portrait shows her with her eyes shut reflects that the composition was posed for effect? Walters was one of the most significant Welsh artists of the twentieth century and was very much an artist of his time and place.
