The scene is an episode from the second book of François Fénélon's 'Les Aventures de Télémaque' (1699) of which Henry Hoare II (1705–1785), the owner of the picture, had a copy. This is one of eight exquisite paintings on copper now at Stourhead which were commissioned by the duc de Choiseul. They were exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1771.
