Le Brocquy began painting images of Joyce in 1964 when he commenced his ancestral heads series. Although he never knew Joyce, le Brocquy feels bound to him as a fellow Dubliner and has painted almost 120 studies towards his image.

The Dublin-born writer James Joyce (1882–1941) is one of the greatest figures in twentieth-century literature. Best known for Ulysses (1922), the record of a Dublin day, his work also includes A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegan’s Wake (1939). Dublin was the setting for most of his writing, although he lived in exile for many years. His work was highly influential in style and technique, particularly the use of the interior monologue.
