The finished painting was begun in Antwerp in 1840 and finished in Paris in 1841, where it was exhibited at the Paris Salon (untraced); a smaller version is in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. The sitter for this study of a swooning attendant was the artist's cousin, Elisabeth Bromley, whom he married in 1841.
