Paul Wager produced five large-scale steel sculptures during his lifetime, all of which can be found on Loughborough University's campus. Drawing on his early life on Durham’s industrial coast, they are inspired by the vibrancy and power of heavy industry. As the title of this work suggests, Wager wanted not just to recreate the physical forms of factory infrastructure, but to suggest something of its communities and their struggles. Wager was born in 1949 and served as an assistant to Lynn Chadwick for a number of years. After spells teaching at institutions including the Winchester School of Art and the Central School of Art & Design in London, he took a teaching job at Loughborough College of Art and Design, where he remained until the early years of the twenty-first century.
