The view is of immediately adjacent pubs on the west side of Royal Hill, Greenwich, seen from a few yards in on the north side of Royal Place. The two adjoining buildings on the right comprise the 'Richard I' (known as the 'Tolly' from earlier being a Tolly Cobbold managed house, though changed to Young's by the time this was painted in c. 1977). The 'Fox and Hounds' on the left is a yellow-stock brick replacement building of 1940, never stuccoed or painted as the artist suggests, which was a free-house at the time. It subsequently had two changes of management and name and in 2021 was also taken over by Young's for combining with the 'Richard I' in 2022. The central flat ground-floor facade of the latter was replaced with a bow window matching that on the right, with a new door to the left, in the 1980s.
