At the lower right is Seaforth Lodge which was demolished in 1846 to make way for the building of the Castle. Yet the Court House, shown in front of the Parish Church, was not completed until 1848. A paddle steamer is shown in the harbour. The first of these to run regularly from Stornoway appeared in the 1830s.
The tall chimney and roof in the left foreground were part of the Shoeburn Distillery, built in 1825 and run by Alexander Mackenzie, landowner of Lewis. It was closed in 1857 and was converted into stables and a coach house for the Matheson family.
