In 1913 Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant visited Picasso in his studio and admired his papiers collés. This still life may, more specifically, be seen as Fry’s response to the collages of the Cubist painter Juan Gris, one of whose works Fry acquired in Paris in 1914.
