St Mark the evangelist, patron of Venice, is shown with his attributes of a lion and a book, open at the words of comfort ('Pax tibi marce') spoken by Christ in a vision to the imprisoned saint. This painting was once flanked by panels with two pairs of saints each: left, Sts Blaise and John the Baptist above Sts Sebastian and Jerome; and right, Sts James Major and Anthony Abbot above Sts Peter and Paul. The complex was probably painted for Santa Maria di San Marco, Pesaro, demolished c.1501. Giovanni Antonio looked to Venetian paintings of the early fourteenth century in Pesaro as a source for his figures.
