This painting and 'St Mary Magdalen' are fragments of a large altarpiece of which two other similarly-shaped panels survive. The artist's name and style are known from a signed and dated work of 1472 which displays affinities with the art of Carlo Crivelli, who worked extensively in the Marches. The ascetic Franciscan saint, sometimes called St Francis, is likely to be the miracle-working James of the Marches (1391–1476) who is depicted with a wound in his side, a reference to his casting out of devils. Many devotional images were commissioned after his death.
