A bronze figure of Peace holding a wreath in both hands, mounted on a tapering stone column. This has a cartouche and drapery carved on all sides at the top, beneath a capital consisting of wreaths and scrolls. The whole is set on two steps which lead up to a tapering base with a palmate carving around the top edge.

black raised letters on west face: SOUTH AFRICAN WAR / 1899 - 1902 / IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE / GATESHEAD MEN WHO LOST THEIR / LIVES IN THEIR COUNTRY'S SERVICE / THIS MEMORIAL WAS / ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW / TOWNSMEN, OCTOBER 1905 / HOW SLEEP THE BRAVE WHO SINK TO REST / BY ALL THE COUNTRY'S WISHES BLESS, / BY FAIRY HANDS THEIR KNELL IS RUNG / BY FORMS UNSEEN THEIR DIRGE IS SUNG / COLLINS - LINES IN 1746; other faces are inscribed with regiments and names.
