The view is down the old Leystraat, later widened, towards the back of the bronze statue of David Teniers the Younger (by Joseph Ducaju, 1867, seen at left) in the Teniersplaats. The painting was shown in an exhibition of Antwerp and Brussels artists organised by the ‘Als ik kann’ group, of which Van der Heyden was a member, at the Modern Art Museum of the Royal Museums Brussels in the first week of June 1892. It was reidentified and its complex route to the RWA collection unravelled in an Art UK Art Detective discussion of 2021: for a summary see the artist biography in Art Detective/Resources. The discussion also noted the existence of a smaller preliminary version dated 1892.
