This portrait was painted posthumously from a photograph by Messrs Annan of Glasgow. Sir William Macewen was one of the giants of medicine in Glasgow. A pioneering surgeon, he published key work on the structure of the brain and in 1879 is thought to have carried out the first operation on a brain tumour.
