Sir Thomas Armstrong (1898–1994) was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music 1955–1968. He is shown three-quarter length and turned to the left, seated on a wooden armchair in his study, with books on the shelves to the rear. His hands are clasped on his lap and his legs crossed. He is wearing a grey suit and a red tie, a white shirt and a bright blue pullover. On his desk lies an open volume showing an illustration of a portrait of George Frideric Handel. An organist, composer and conductor, including of the Oxford Bach Choir and Orchestral Society, Sir Thomas was a choirboy of the Chapel Royal from 1907–1910. He presented to the Academy a copy of Arnold's ‘Collected Edition of Handel's Works’, with reference to the Royal Library.
