Sir Robert Clayton was President of St. Thomas' (1692–1707) and Lord Mayor of London (1679). This is one of only four known marble works by Gibbons, the renowned woodcarver. This statue is rather weathered, one hand was replaced in the nineteenth century and the plinth was embellished after Clayton's death.
