Sir Leslie Arnold Turnberg (b.1934) has held many positions during his medical career, including president of the Royal College of Physicians (1992–1997), and president of the Medical Protection Society (1997–2007). He is currently the scientific adviser to the Association of Medical Research Charities. He has published many books and articles related to the medical and health service fields, and has also chaired the board of the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research. This centre was set up by the UK government to explore alternatives to animal testing, for example using cells cultured from humans, or using computer simulations. Turnberg was made a baron in 2000. The portrait is by Anthony Oakshett, who paints portraits and large scale paintings.
