The bust was sculpted following ten sittings by Sir Lennox Berkeley in his home in Warwick Avenue, Little Venice; following its exhibition at the Cheltenham Festival, Chester Music contacted the artist on 27th October 1983 asking to purchase the bust. The copy now in the Academy was a gift from the artist to the Berkeleys. The bust was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1983.
