Sir Henry Leslie (1822–1896) trained first as a violinist before turning his hand to conducting. For 25 years he directed a renowned choir that bore his name, a highly disciplined and painstakingly rehearsed ensemble that specialised in unaccompanied part-music. Henry Leslie's Choir won first prize at the International Choral Competition at the Paris Exhibition in 1878, shortly before their dissolution in 1880. Leslie was also active as a composer and editor, mainly of choral works.
