Born in Ireland, Sloane travelled to London and then France where he took a degree in medicine. After a brief period in Jamaica as physician to the governor, Sloane returned to England with a major collection of plant and animal specimens. He became physician to Queen Anne in 1712 and physician-general to the army in 1716 and he was made a baronet. In 1713, Sloane purchased the Manor of Chelsea and its estate. This he leased to the Society of Apothecaries who had founded the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1673. In 1727, Sloane became President of the Royal Society, a post he kept for fourteen years. His collection and library formed the nucleus of the British Museum. Sloane is seen in a chair surmounted by the arms and motto of the Royal Society, of which he was President (1727–1741), together with the Society's presidential mace.
