The sculpture celebrates the achievements of Sir Frank Whittle, inventor and RAF Officer who is credited with inventing the turbo jet engine. It is a large oval sculpture, with the point passing back through the eye of the needle. There is a low relief of Whittle and his designs on the inner edge of the sculpture. It sits on a half globe.
