This portrait was commissioned by Maufe in 1940. The artist later explained that the background to the portrait was the signed original sketch made by Maufe that won him the Guildford Cathedral competition in 1932, while the architect is seen with a plan of the cathedral in front of him. Maufe is wearing an artist's smock to protect his clothes from ink and pencil marks. Although he was best known as a church architect and Guildford was his most famous commission (1936–1964), Maufe had a successful career that included designing theatres, houses and collegiate buildings. He was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects's Royal Gold Medal in 1944. Born into a wealthy Jewish family that owned the J. Lyons & Co. Corner House and catering empire, Hannah Gluckstein defied her family to become an artist.
