Maurice Codner was a near neighbour, fellow artist and great friend of Alfred Munnings. They had met in 1919, the same year that Munnings acquired Castle House. Both enjoyed days out in the countryside and going on painting expeditions together. Munnings recalls Codner's reaction to witnessing an artist working one day when they were out riding together:

'I have told how, after wasting days on horseback, we were riding down a lane near Thorrington Street, of his [Codner's] cry of anguish and misery at seeing an artist sitting peacefully at work in a meadow as we passed: "Alfred let's finish with all this silly riding about... I am going to start work tomorrow." The next day we began.'
