Norman Wilkinson started his artistic career as an illustrator and 1898 covered the America's Cup challenge by Sir Thomas Lipton. He subsequently served in the Royal Naval Reserve, was responsible for the use of 'dazzle' painting to confuse the enemy, and was Honorary Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron. In 1939 he was appointed inspector of camouflage with the rank of Air Commodore and continued to produce many fine paintings. This picture is of the St James's Fight with Prince Rupert attacking the Dutch in the North Sea.
