The work is a symbolic representation of the canal with the sloping uprights representing the canal banks and the space between the canal. The panels are inscribed with images (navvies, ships), extracts from documents (song about the canal, statistics on the locks) and artefacts (matchbox) relating to Manchester Ship Canal.
