This painting is a head and shoulders self portrait in the artist's home. He is shown wearing a dark blue shirt with his right arm resting on a windowsill. His image is reflected in an Art Deco rectangular mirror propped on the windowsill in front of a casement window. An apple, pencil and jewellery stand are placed in front of the mirror. Cowper was born at Greystoke near Penrith in 1936 and attended Carlisle College of Art where he painted a mural for Carlisle Library. He then attended the Royal College of Art. He taught at Huddersfield Polytechnic for thirty years.
