Baker was a London merchant who died in 1695. He left money in his will to set up a school for boys in Coventry which was opened in 1703. The school later became Bablake School. A small figure on the left looks up towards Baker – could it perhaps be one of the boys from the school?
This painting is attributed because of its style to John Riley who is better known for his paintings of servants.
