This portrait was probably commissioned by Samuel Baker. It shows him as successful and wealthy but also sober and respectable. The lace and fur he is wearing were very expensive items at the time. His coat of arms is shown in the top right of the painting.

Baker was a London merchant who died in 1695. He left money in his will to set up a school for boys in Coventry which was opened in 1703. The school later became Bablake School. A small figure on the left looks up towards Baker – could it perhaps be one of the boys from the school?

This painting is attributed because of its style to John Riley who is better known for his paintings of servants.
