A square sampler; embroidered from the top with capital letters alphabet (complete) and numerals (1–9 and 0) plus the date (1844); next a lower case alphabet, numerals and a small coronet motif; next capital followed by lower case alphabet and the date (1845); followed by a verse and finally the maker details; each line is separated by a simple decorative narrow band, each one different, the first one continues around each edge; worked entirely in dark brown silk thread; each edge hemmed; verse stitched 'cease to do evil . Learn to do well . and c . Evil communications corrupt manners. Train up a child the way he should go.' inscription stitched 'Caroline Hall June 22 1846 Aged 14 years.' Completed in stages.
