Inscription description
oil on canvas, Jane Needham, Mrs Myddelton (1645-1692) studio of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680). The inscription 'Mary Cholmondeley, Lady Myddelton' is erroneous. The sitter does not resemble the youthful portraits of 'La Myddelton' but the pose resembles [ but not identical] that of a Lely of 'Madame Middleton' mezzotinted by R Thompson, and the face that of a Lely studio full length called 'Mrs Middleton' at Goodwood. It is hard to see who else can have been meant by these names.
