Work on the tower of church, which stands besides Ketteringham Hall, was provided for by Sir John Boileau in his will. Sir John's fraught relationship with the rector, William Wayte Andrew, is memorably chronicled in Owen Chadwick's Victorian Miniature, London 1960 and many eds. The three statues stand erect and looking out from three corners of the tower completed around 1870. St Peter is based on early Christian prototypes and is shown bearded. He wears a short cloak over his tunic and stands with his hands crossed holding an open book inscribed with the name of Jesus while the keys to the kingdom of heaven hang under his right sleeve. The angels hold their hands together in prayer and look up to the heavens. Modern sources have suggested an attribution to James Minns (1828-1904), active in Norwich in this period as a wood carver and sculptor.
