Juan de Borgona’s paintings were popular for their vivid colours and skilful depiction of costume. Here, Saint Jerome is dressed in the red robes of a Cardinal. He revised the Latin version of the Psalms and the New Testament hence the ink well tied to his wrist. He looks up as Saint Ambrose speaks to him. Ambrose was a popular Bishop of Milan, fellow theologian and composer of hymns. The two saints are represented against a tooled gold background. This and its companion painting are thought to be predella panels from what must have been a very large altarpiece.
