This oil sketch is probably a nineteenth-century copy of part of the frescoes painted by Francisco de Goya for the church of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid. Construction of San Antonio started in 1792 and was complete, including Goya’s frescoes, by 1799. The fresco was one of his largest projects after his illness of 1792. The main scene, pictured in this copy, occupied the dome. It illustrates the legendary story of Saint Anthony. While in Padua, Saint Anthony received news that his father had been accused of murdering a man in Lisbon. With the permission of his superiors Saint Anthony miraculously flew to Lisbon. He asked the corpse whether his father was the murderer; the dead man rose, said no, and then sank back to his coffin. Saint Anthony’s father was acquitted.
