A relief carving of branches, leaves and acorns which are individually shaped, yet intricately worked to form a spreading oak tree, that fits snugly into the shape of the arch. Superimposed on the tree is a regal crown, and both tree and crown project forward of a rising sun, a popular motif in this period. The carving is brightly painted, forming a decorative foil to the red brick neo-William and Mary style building, as well as providing a bold emblem. The inscription on the lintel below is also carved. The Royal Oak was designed in 1926 by the architect Holland Hobbiss for the Frederick Smith brewery as new licensed premises. Because the architectural drawings show details of a fanlight in the tympanum, the carved relief was presumably made at a later date, probably at the instigation of the client.
