The design of the sun, notably its facial features and sinuously modelled rays, was largely dictated by the existing emblem which the Insurance company had displayed on a hanging sign over the entrance to the previous office on this site. Although Bloye's carving closely follows the original graphic image, the boldly outlined details are filled out and subtly modelled in a serpentine style characteristic of Bloye's sculptures.
