Scottish-born Robert Fowler was educated in Liverpool, moving to London to study at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the South Kensington Schools. Ill health forced him to return north, and after convalescing in Yorkshire and North Wales, he settled in Liverpool with a studio that soon became a convivial cultural meeting place. He exhibited in London, Paris and Munich, and designed posters for the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. At the turn of the century he moved to Chelsea and was an active member of the London watercolour societies. His classical and mythological figure compositions are much influenced by Symbolism, the prevailing Aesthetic Movement and its taste for all things oriental, and the work of Frederic Leighton, Albert Moore, George Frederick Watts and James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
